Experience Volcán Mombacho (Mombacho Volcano)

This is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. A trip to Nicaragua, and especially if you are visiting Granada, would not be complete without seeing this incredible volcano. Bring quality shoes and a good camera, because there is some hiking involved and opportunities for photos are everywhere. These were some of the best shots we took the whole trip. 14 Apr. 2017

Though it has been a while since the Volcán Mombacho has erupted, this majestic icon of Granada skyline is still active, and smoke is constantly erupting from the mouth of Mombacho. Getting close to the peak is quite easy, thanks to repurposed military jeeps operated by the foundation that manages the park, Fundación Cocibolca. More about Volcán Mombacho

Once you get there, there are a number of trails leading to the top, ranging from easy to difficult, and from about 30 minutes to around 3 hours. Also be sure to visit the butterfly garden (mariposario), organic coffee farm with great coffee to go, and orchid garden.

If you make it to Nicaragua, your trip is not complete without a visit to this volcano, and the surrounding ecosystem. Great views of Lago Nicaragua from the top. Monkeys, 3 toed sloth and many more wildlife in the rainforest surrounding the park. We also did the zip lining, coffee plantation and tip of the volcano. Took about 3 days for my legs to recover. Getting to Volcán Mombacho

Getting to Mombacho is quite easy. The park is located at a crossroads called El Guanacaste, about halfway between Granada and Nandiame. From the crossroads, it is about 2 kilometers to the entrance of the park. If you are on a budget, take any bus labeled “Nandaime” from Granada, and tell the driver you want El Guanacaste or Mombacho.

From there, hike to the entrance of the park, and take the jeep to the top. If you are going with a group, you may want to take a taxi. This way, you can bypass the 2 kilometer walk to the entrance. As of April 2017, the jeep schedule up and down the volcano is:

  • Up at 8:30 AM and Down at 11:30 AM
