Experience the Architectural Beauty of Iglesia de La Merced

The Iglesia de La Merced is one of the most beautiful and oldest architectural wonders in a city that is filled with them. One of the most popular and reviewed attractions in Granada, it is also one of the most convenient if you are staying there.

I made my way to the bell tower just before sunset, and it was well worth the pain in my legs after the steep staircase. Walking through the church is a truly magical experience, whether you are religious or not (I am not). I was awestruck by the beauty of the icons and altars and images. Once you reach the top of the bell tower, you have amazing views of Lake Nicaragua and the city and the volcano. Apr 2017

Built in 1534, this landmark church is only a few blocks away from the main square. The church is open to the public, and for a small fee ($1) you can climb the tower to the top of the bell and experience a once-in-a-lifetime view of the city, Mombacho volcano and Lake Nicaragua.

This is the best place to discover the whole city. The best time to go is right before sunset so you can watch the incredible sunset and view the skyline. It only costs a dollar. Check with them ahead of time to make sure they will be open the day you plan to visit. Mar 2017
