Guadalupe Church – Beautiful Colonial Architecture

Guadalupe Church is a beautiful example of Spanish colonial design, with a stunning facade and ancient stained glass windows. Located on La Calzada, it is a quick walk from anywhere in Granada and worth a trip to explore the towers and interior. Walking through the church, you can believe you are truly in a different era.

stunning church

The exterior is aged and shabby, which somehow makes it more beautiful. At night, the lighting is stunning. Apr 2017

About Guadalupe Church

Iglesia de Guadalupe was founded around 1625-1626 by monk Benito de Baltodano. The church is situated at the end of La Calzada, at the entrance to the old city and in front of Lake Nicaragua. This was a strategic position during pirate days, and it has seen numerous battles and fires.

In 1856, William Walker , an American that briefly took the presidency of Nicaragua, made an 18 day stand at the church. Seeing that he was losing the battle, Walker ordered his men to sack the entire city of Granada, including Guadalupe church.

fairytale church

when I see this church, I think of a fairytale or a palace. The shapes of the domes and towers are like nothing I have ever seen outside of a movie. Amazing that there is still an active church here.. Mar 2017
